Couple share their love of nature through artwork

Husband and wife naturalists Kevin Mack and Julie Stonefelt will open their art studio from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at 8819 236th St. SW, Edmonds.

There will be refreshments, and demonstrations will take place throughout each day. Originals, cards and prints will be for sale.

Mack has a biology degree and is employed as a naturalist at a wildlife rehabilitation facility, working with animals such as hummingbirds and cougars. Mack’s art is photography. He said he used to photograph injured animals that were his patients but now he takes pictures of healthy animals in their environment because he finds that therapeutic

Stonefelt has a bachelor of science degree and has worked with wildlife rehabilitation and environmental organizations in New York and Washington states. She started painting birds, feathers in particular, while working with injured and orphaned raptors in New York. She couldn’t keep the feathers of the birds she helped, so she painted them to keep the birds’ beauty with her and to share that beauty with others.

Going abroad: Artist Ron Stocke was recently inspired by a trip to England and Ireland and has returned with a variety of watercolor paintings from his trip.

Those works will be shown this month as the featured art at WiseDesignz gallery, 2908 Wetmore Ave., Everett.

Stocke’s work reveals a combination of traditional and contemporary styles in his detailed architecture of quaint towns, and his marine drawings are mixed with an expressive and colorful watercolor.

Art on display: Each year, the Mountlake Terrace Arts Commission selects one work of art from the Arts of the Terrace Juried Art Show to go into the city’s public art collection. This year, six selections will be on display.

Works include “Conway Evening,” a watercolor by Thomas Olson from 1989; “Water Lily Mountain,” a pastel by Rosaire McAuliffe from 1994; “Young Sonya,” a painting by Karen Dale from 1999; “Mexican Masks,” a print by Laura Brown from 2001; “Grey Wolf in Motion,” a photograph by Mark Dodge from 2003; and “Mama Sewed Our Clothes II,” mixed media by Donna Jean Perry from 2006.

The show runs through Monday at Mountlake Terrace Library, 23300 58th Ave. W., Mountlake Terrace.

The exhibit is a precursor to the 29th annual Arts of the Terrace Juried Art Show, set for Sept. 29 through Oct. 6.

In other art news: The Sisters restaurant, 2804 Grand Ave., Everett, is hosting an exhibit of watercolor and mixed media paintings by Donna Perkins Wylie through Nov. 2. … Sue Robertson is showing her works of figurative acrylic paintings at Espresso Americano Cafe inside the Everett Public Library, 2702 Hoyt Ave., Everett, through Oct. 15.

The heat is on: Columbia City Gallery in Seattle is presenting its second annual juried art exhibition called “HEAT,” which will feature the work of 23 local artists. The work includes a different perspective of the sun and a whimsical clay sculpture of a “red hot pair.”

The exhibit runs through Nov. 11 with opening night festivities from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the gallery, 4864 Rainier Ave. S., Seattle. The event is free.
