Essentially Edmonds contest winners

Tom Newitt won first place in the Essentially Edmonds photo contest organized by the Edmonds Arts Commission.

Marc Weinberg was the second-place winner; Lynne Hann and Peter Olsen won honorable mention awards.

The awards were presented at a reception during the Third Thursday Art Walk on Oct. 20.

Thirty-two people entered 75 photos in the contest.

Mural society winner

Andy Eccleshall’s “The Brothers” won the Edmonds Mural Society’s Members Choice Award for 2011.

Upon learning of the 2011 theme of “Hidden Treasures,” Eccleshall was inspired by a dramatic parting of the clouds over the Olympic mountain range, revealing a ray of sun on the snow-capped peak known as The Brothers.

Auditions at Driftwood Theater

The Edmonds Driftwood Players is holding auditions for “The Peregrine Sonata” by Northwest playwright Amanda Aikman.

Auditions are at 4 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7 p.m. Nov. 7, at the Driftwood administration office, 306 Main St., Edmonds.

There are parts for seven women in their 20s through 50s and two men in their 30s or 40s.

Auditioners should prepare a two-minute contemporary monologue and bring a picture and resume.

Go behind the music

Learn more about Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” with the Seattle Symphony’s “Beyond the Score” concert.

Music director Ludovic Morlot leads the symphony on this musical journey at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle.

Designed to let audience members delve deeper into the world of classical music, “Beyond the Score” concerts explore the history and context behind a great masterwork. Following intermission, audiences will enjoy a complete performance of the work.

Michael W. Smith coming to Everett

Contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Michael W. Smith is bringing his Christmas concert to the Northwest, 5 p.m. Dec. 5 at Comcast Arena at Everett, 2000 Hewitt Ave.

“It’s A Wonderful Christmas” features Smith performing selections from his Christmas albums with a full symphony orchestra.

Disney On Ice at Comcast

Everyone’s favorite toys take to the ice in “Disney On Ice presents Disney Pixar’s ‘Toy Story 3.’”

Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the gang stop in Snohomish County 7:30 p.m. Nov. 3-4; 11:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5; and 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Nov. 6 at Comcast Arena at Everett, 2000 Hewitt Ave.

Music and wine pairing

Seattle Symphony’s “Baroque &Wine” series opens with guest conductor Andrew Manze leading a program that explores how musical influence traverses the centuries, 8 p.m. Oct. 28 and Oct. 29 at Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., Seattle.

Harpsichordist Kristian Bezuidenhout will join the orchestra to perform two J. S. Bach’s works. Each of Bach’s pieces will be paired with a 20th-century work that drew inspiration from the earlier era. Manze will discuss the connection between these works from the stage.

The “Baroque &Wine” series pairs programs of Baroque masterworks with pre-concert wine tasting events. Wine tastings are held in the Samuel and Althea Stroum Grand Lobby from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. on the night of the concert. Wine tasting tickets are sold separately at $10 for five pours.
