It will be a night at the movies Sunday when the Everett Chorale sings an entire program devoted to “Favorite Songs From the Silver Screen,” belting out soundtrack selections from such blockbusters as “The Wizard of Oz,” “Romeo and Juliet” and “Sleepless in Seattle,” along with a suite of songs from the land of Disney.
The chorale did a similar songs-from-the-cinema program about four years ago and music director and conductor Lee Mathews said it was time for an encore.
“There’s so much wonderful music out there and we had a lot of it in our library,” Mathews said. “So with trying to watch our budget, we decided that if the music is there and it’s beautiful, why not use it?”
Other movie music to be sung will include tunes from “Oliver,” “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie,” “Brigadoon” and “Man of La Mancha.”
Most of us remember the movie “Sleepless in Seattle.” But not many may remember the music from the film.
“When you see that movie, you don’t really realize how important a part the music plays,” Mathews said. “Like when they are on the telephone, the background music is good old golden oldies.”
The chorale will sing a medley of “Sleepless” songs including “As Time Goes By,” “An Affair to Remember” and “A Wink and a Smile.”
The Disney song favorites are “Circle of Life,” “I Just Can’t Wait to be King,” “A Star is Born,” “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” and “Zero to Hero.”
“I love the song ‘I Just Can’t Wait to be King,’” Mathews said, adding that as beautiful as it is, the piece is a complex one to learn.
“But, gosh, the words, some of the text — it’s just terrific,” he said. “It’s going to be a great program.”
To complete the movie experience, the concert will incorporate a cinematic element
The chorale has put together a slide show of vintage movie posters — one with Errol Flynn on the cover — that will be shown on stage with the help of a projectionist.
“Audiences like that extra dimension,” Mathews said, “the visual and the aural experience.”
