Cleo Laine made her professional debut with John Dankworth in 1958, and later married him.

It was a combo made in jazz heaven, although she spent many years as a soloist and actress, including acting in London Shakespearean productions. Now known as Britain’s First Couple of Jazz, they will perform Thursday through Aug. 1 in Seattle.

Laine is the only singer to receive Grammy nominations in the female jazz, popular and classical categories, and has a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Jazz Society.

Dankworth is known for his cross-boundary journeys with alto saxophone and clarinet. He earned an Academy Award nomination for his score of “Return from the Ashes.”

Eric Clapton: He has been “retiring” from a four-decade career for years but can’t seem to live with everyone else’s definition of retirement. Clapton performs Tuesday in Seattle. He is still the guitar god, though, so you know what’s coming along with the hits (“After Midnight,” “Robert Johnson,” “They’re Red Hot,” “Have You Ever Loved a Woman?”) from the legendary performer: inspiring guitar solos.

Hootie &the Blowfish: Winners of two Grammy awards, including one for Best New Artist, Hootie performs Thursday in Redmond. The band debuted with Atlantic Records a decade ago when the members were university students. “Cracked Rear View” hit the top-10 with its accessible pop-meets-blues-rock style. The latest album is an 18-song best-of CD that includes the chart-topping singles “Only Wanna Be With You” and “Let Her Cry.”

Hoobastank: Expect music from the platinum-selling “The Reason” and some older material on the L.A.-based band’s Saturday stop in Seattle. The title track became a Top 5 hit on Billboard’s Hot 100 Chart. And yes, the band’s still playing “Disappear.”

Mutual Admiration Society: MAS is made up of Toad The Wet Sprocket’s Glen Philips and bluegrass sensation Nickel Creek, as well as guests John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello’s band). MAS performs Tuesday in Seattle.

Mercan Dede: Turkish-born world-beat musician and his Secret Tribe play Wednesday in Seattle. The music is exotic to most of us, but it is not beyond most folks’ reach. Think American funk paired with traditional Turkish music, the part rooted in Sufism, a mystic branch of Islam. It’s a marriage of electronic sounds with acoustic instruments.
