Celebrity interior designer Christopher Lowell shows how to declutter and redesign your home in his book “Seven Layers of Organization.”
Today, as part of a seven-week Tuesday tip series, we address Layer 6: Arrange and Display.
This stage is the most fun because you’re ready to display your decorative objects around the house and in the storage solutions you’ve discovered.
Though creating displays that are pleasing to the eye is an art, Lowell believes anyone can do it.
His tips: Group like items together by theme, style or color. Lift and layer items for a dynamic look. Let each group of items tell a story, not just fill a space.
Add a few large items to accentuate the room’s height and space. Small things in a tiny room can make it look even smaller. Break large spaces into separate living areas for room-within-a-room functionality. Add mood lighting to define and increase the function of each space.
Don’t fill every nook and cranny. Let the room breathe. Don’t push furniture against the walls. Bring sitting-room furniture to the center and anchor it with a coffee table. Leave about 20 inches in between pieces to allow for easy foot traffic through the space.
