What: Acer palmatum ‘Viridis,’ commonly called green laceleaf Japanese maple, is a captivating dwarf Japanese maple with bright green, lacey foliage and strongly cascading branches that forms an elegant dome-shaped specimen over time. In autumn the leaves turn bright orange with golden yellow undertones and crimson highlights. It is the most vigorous and adaptable of the green foliaged laceleaf maples. Mature plants have lovely and elegantly twisted branches that standout through the winter months.
Where: Develops the best fall color in full sun to open shade, but will still thrive in dappled shade. Japanese maples are surprisingly flexible in their soil requirements. Although they will grow best in a rich well-drained soil, they will also do well in sandy soils and clay.
Size: Grows to 4 feet tall by 7 feet wide in 10 years, and 15 feet tall by 8 feet wide when mature.
Care: Water regularly to prevent the fine leaves from burning at the tips. Consult an expert or take pruning classes before attempting to prune.
