Herald film critic and author Robert Horton will speak about the Hollywood star system at the Harbour Pointe Retirement Community at 2 p.m. Jan. 11.
Horton’s presentation “The Dream Factory: How Hollywood Created the Star” will look at how the first great movie stars were created during the golden age of the Hollywood studio system.
How were stars like Clark Gable handled and why was Rita Hayworth’s forehead heightened? Horton explores why some actors had the “it” factor that made them classics and how stars were made on the assembly line in the “Dream Factory.”
Horton is a film critic for The Herald and Seattle Weekly and a longtime contributor to Film Comment magazine. He curates the Magic Lantern film-discussion program at the Frye Art Museum, teaches film at Seattle University, is on the Fulbright Specialist Prgram roster and serves as a guest speaker for Smithsonian Journeys. His books include “Frankenstein” and “Billy Wilder: Interviews,” blogs on movies at The Crop Duster (roberthorton.wordpress.com/) and is the co-host of the Overlook podcast.
The presentation is free and open to the public but reservations must be made by Jan. 10. To make a reservation or for more information, call 425-493-8555.
