The delightful blog Letters of Note, which shares pictures and transcripts of interesting historical correspondence, recently devoted an entry to an 1897 letter by a little girl asking whether Santa Claus is real. The oft-quoted response from a newspaper editor contains the following familiar passage:
“Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy.”
No matter how many times you’ve read them, both Virginia’s letter, written in charming cursive, and Francis Pharcellus Church’s reply are worth revisiting today.
Merry Christmas.
