In the swim of Salty Sea Days

Everett celebrates its maritime heritage with Salty Sea Days, the annual summer festival that includes Saturday’s downtown grand parade and a ireworks show on the waterfront. A carnival on the Everett waterfront continues today through Sunday.

More events are scheduled the weekend of June 12 and 13, including a classic car show and boat races.

The Salty Sea Days grand parade is set for 11 a.m. Saturday in downtown Everett with marching bands, drill teams, classic cars and clowns.

The fireworks show starts at 10 p.m. Saturday at Marine Park.

The Salty Sea Days carnival, with rides, food and arts and crafts, is taking place at the 10th Street Boat Launch on W. Marine View Drive on the Everett waterfront, and continues through Sunday.

Everett Transit provides shuttle service today through Sunday between the EverPark Garage at Hewitt and Hoyt in downtown Everett and the carnival.

The shuttle will operate about every half hour from 6 to 11 p.m. today, 1 to 11 p.m. Saturday and noon to 7 p.m. Sunday. The fare is 75 cents, 35 cents for seniors 62 and older and 35 cents for children 6-17.

Parking is free in the garage after 6 p.m. today and all day Saturday and Sunday.

Edmonds Waterfront Festival: Edmonds rolls out the welcome mat on the waterfront this weekend at the Edmonds Waterfront Festival that begins today.

The festival, sponsored by Rotary Club of Edmonds, draws thousands of visitors to the Edmonds Marina for three days of live entertainment, games, food booths, a beer garden, art and crafts, children’s activities, boat and duck races, a trout pond and other activities.

Two stages offer a wide variety of entertainment ranging from blues bands and rock ‘n’ roll to children’s entertainers such as Tia and the Reptile Man.

Admission is $2, free to children under age 10, and there’s free shuttle bus service from four locations. Proceeds from the event go to a variety of Rotary charitable projects, including scholarships and programs for homeless youth.

See the animals: The petting zoo in Everett’s Forest Park opens Saturday. But if you can’t wait until then to see some furry and feathered critters up close, check out the petting zoo in Marysville’s Jennings Memorial Park, which opened last weekend.

These two popular animal farms attract thousands of visitors every summer and give animal lovers an opportunity to see farm animals up close.

Chef du jour: The Everett Farmers Market, which is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday on the Everett waterfront, is kicking off a new feature this Sunday: a weekly chef’s demonstration.

At 3 p.m. Sunday “Oyster Bill” Whitbeck will be showing how to prepare clams and mussels in the Mediterranean style. He will also demonstrate oyster shucking and how to barbecue oysters.

Whitbeck is the author of “Joy of Oysters” cookbook and the owner of Clambake Cruises, which offers New England style clambake dinners served aboard a classic wooden Maine lobster boat.

Highland Games: The 44th annual Bellingham Highland Games take place all day Saturday at the Hovander Homestead Park near Ferndale.

The event features traditional Scottish contests and performances including bagpipe and drum bands, highland and Scottish country dancing and traditional athletic events such as the hammer throw.
