“Jubalay!” is a little-known Canadian musical revue from the 1970s. It’s 60 minutes of theater songs including traditional musical theater, swing, French cabaret, folk, rock, gospel and even a little vaudeville.
When she saw the show four times in 1976, producer Tricia Countryman knew she had to perform it herself one day. Now, she’s enlisted her favorite performers to help mount the show.
“The show should have been a bigger hit, as the songs are extremely well-written, and many of them are just as poignant and applicable to our society today,” Countryman said.
Countryman tracked down the show’s composer, Patrick Rose, who now lives in Toronto, and she negotiated the rights to revive the show. “I think he’d mostly forgotten about this show of his, but it’s so good that I couldn’t forget it.”
“Jubalay!” is done in classic revue style where there is no actual plot or dialogue. The cast includes Countryman, Jeff Thirloway, Melissa Thirloway and Mike McFadden.
It’s directed by Melissa Hanbey with musical direction by Dana Countryman and includes this band of musicians: Gayle Sells on piano, Todd Parks on drums and Dana Countryman on bass.
Shows are 8 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday, and 8 p.m. Aug. 15 and 7 p.m. Aug. 16 at Thumbnail Theatre, 1211 Fourth St., Snohomish. Tickets are $15 at the door or online at www.jubalay.com.
