Let’s do some Cruzin’ to Colby

Hundreds of people will be groovin’ and cruisin’ Saturday through Monday at Cruzin’ to Colby weekend events held at the Everett Events Center.

Johnny Limbo and the Lug Nuts in concert: 7 p.m. Saturday.

Controlled cruise: 3 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Sock hop: 7 to 11 p.m. Sunday; $5.

Pacific Northwest BBQ Association state championship barbecue competition: Sunday and Monday (winner announced at 12:30 p.m. Monday).

Show N Shine: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday.

“Illusions of Elvis” by Danny Vernon: 1 p.m. Monday.

Where: Everett Events Center, 2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett.

Tickets: $20 concert; $5 sock hop; $20 entry for cruise or show; $50 show ‘n shine, cruise, two concert tickets and two sock hop admission.

The sixth-annual event features a concert with Johnny Limbo and the Lug Nuts, a cruise-in with classic cars, a sock hop and Show ‘n’ Shine, a car show.

Kicking off the event on Saturday is a performance by the Portland, Ore., band Johnny Limbo and the Lug Nuts at 7 p.m.

The popular band started in 1978 and performs classic hits of the ’50s and ’60s. Tributes by the band include to Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and Buddy Holly. Featuring nine members, the band boasts a horn section, a female vocalist, costumes and choreography.

A controlled cruise takes place on the streets of Everett from 3 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

More than 400 hot rods, custom and classic cars take the streets, followed by a sock hop in the main ballroom of the Events Center. The old-fashioned sock hop, from 7 to 11 p.m., is open to the general public for $5 and benefits local charities. Children younger than 12 are admitted free.

More than 800 cars head back downtown for the annual Show ‘n’ Shine on Monday.

Vendors show off memorabilia and sell food and other items. Elvis impersonator Danny Vernon takes the stage at 1 p.m. for “Illusions of Elvis.” The show ‘n shine trophy presentation ceremony follows.

The Pacific Northwest BBQ Association hosts its annual state championship barbecue competition at the City of Everett Parking lot at Wetmore and Wall streets on Sunday and Monday. Winners will be announced prior to Vernon’s performance.

Cruzin’ to Colby is sponsored by Frontier Bank and the Seattle Rod-Tiques.

Wild Waves and Enchanted Park opens: Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of the summer season at amusement parks across the country, including Federal Way’s Wild Waves and Enchanted Village water and fun park.

Beginning Saturday, the park is open daily through Sept. 5.

This weekend is also Military Appreciation Weekend. Individuals showing military ID receive two free admission tickets.

The park’s more than 70 acres features water slides, the Konga River (a 24,000-square-foot wave pool) and more than 20 rides, including TimberHawk, billed as the largest roller coaster in Washington state.

New to Wild Waves this year is Zooma Falls. The five-story raft ride along the Konga River features four heart-pounding turns and five acceleration zones.

Daily and season passes are available.

Wild Waves and Enchanted Village is a Six Flags amusement park.
