The “Big” Small Show opens Tuesday at the Arts of Snohomish Gallery, 105 Cedar Ave., Snohomish, where patrons can view art and support community outreach programs and arts education.

This fifth annual show includes a silent auction and fundraising event.

The “Big” Small Show features works no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches by a variety of artists from Arts of Snohomish Gallery and the surrounding area.

The silent auction invites audience participation and gives art lovers an affordable opportunity to begin or enhance their art collections.

On the last day of the show, an artists reception is scheduled for 5 to 8 p.m. Dec. 5 for the final bidding as well as to view and discuss the many works.

Honoring our heroes: Soon, a sculpture will be dedicated in Mountlake Terrace that pays homage to firefighters.

Last year, the Mountlake Terrace city council had selected Seattle sculptor Louise McDowell to create the 1 percent for art sculpture for Fire Station 19, which was built in 2005. The Arts Advisory Commission recommended McDowell to the city council after reviewing more than 20 proposals.

“Our goal was to select artwork that would celebrate firefighters’ community service and the passing down of tradition from one generation to the next,” said Judy Ryan, arts advisory commission chairwoman. The sculpture will be unveiled during a ceremony at 1 p.m. Nov. 7 at 5902 232nd St., SW, Mountlake Terrace. Snohomish County Fire District 1 is hosting an open house at Fire Station 19 in conjunction with the art unveiling.

McDowell will be on hand to share her thoughts on the bronze statue that depicts a firefighter leaning over to place a fire hat on a child’s head.

Dive into oils: An exhibition of new oil paintings by Ursula Stocke displays the themes of water and lily pads in an expressive painterly style in which Stocke explores abstract shapes and colors and the forms they create.

Stocke’s work is being shown at 9308 Evergreen Way in the new Everett Artist’s Supply and Framing Visual Art Center gallery. The exhibition kicks off with a reception from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 6. The exhibition will run through Nov. 27.

Stocke’s figurative works are distinguished, having been shown in galleries in Everett, Kirkland and Seattle. She has exhibited in both the Edmonds and Everett art festivals. In 2003 she was a guest artist in the women’s art league annual art exhibit in Portland. Her work has also been included in the Portland Street of Dreams tour and been published in catalogs.
