In addition to chowder tastings and cooking demonstrations, the 25th anniversary of the Penn Cove Musselfest on Whidbey Island offers fun family activities that don’t involve eating the bivalves.

The Musselfest is scheduled for 5:30 to 8:30 tonight; 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at festival headquarters, Coupeville Recreation Hall, 4 NE Seventh St.

For more information, go to www.thepenncovemussel festival.com or call the Central Whidbey Chamber of Commerce at 360-678-5434.

If you are starting off the festival with a date night away from the kids, you might want to check out the Mussel Mingle from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. tonight. There will be live music by The Halyards, as well as bratwurst, beer and wine. Tickets are $20.

For you and the kids, take a ride aboard the Mussel Shuttles. This free trip aboard 24-passenger mini coaches takes guests along the “tasting route” from downtown Coupeville, out to the Captain Whidbey Inn and back to south Main Street. The shuttles run from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Children’s seaside activities are planned along with story times. The children’s activities are scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Island County Historical Society Museum, 908 NW Alexander St., Coupeville.

For the athletically minded family, the Whidbey Island Bicycle Club is sponsoring the first “Mussels in Kettles” mountain bike poker run.

This is a noncompetitive ride for all abilities. There will be three courses throughout the Fort Ebey and Kettles trail systems. The ride is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Registration and more information is available at www.WhidbeyBicycleClub.org.
