Reviews

“16 Blocks” HHH Nothing stupendous, but this tale of a weary cop (Bruce Willis) escorting a targeted witness (Mos Def) is greatly enhanced by the very appealing performances of the two actors. Richard Donner directed, just well enough to make the simple situation work. (PG-13, for violence, language.)

“Brokeback Mountain” HHHH Two cowboys come together in the summer of 1963, and can’t quite get over their mutual passion as their lives continue. Much more than its “gay cowboy” label, Ang Lee’s film is a superb Western, well acted by Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. (R, for language, violence, nudity.)

“C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America” HHH A mockumentary detailing how the South won the Civil War, and what history has been like with slavery as an American institution. Kevin Willmott’s film is wildly uneven but sometimes wildly funny, and it’s regularly ingenious. (Not rated; probably R for subject matter.) (Not rated; probably R, for subject matter.)

“Eight Below” HHH This tale of sled dogs stranded in the Antarctic was inspired, very loosely, by a true story. The survival adventure stuff is refreshingly sober, and the minimum of dialogue helps. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Firewall” HH Banker Harrison Ford’s family is taken hostage by mastermind Paul Bettany; the tired premise gets a high-tech gloss, with lots of scenes of people clacking away at keyboards. Ford looks pretty old here, but we still confidently await his turning of the tables. (PG-13, for violence, language.)

“Inside Man” HHH A bank heist evolves into a complicated guessing game, with a much bigger canvas at play. Spike Lee’s film is essentially absurd, but mostly entertaining, with Clive Owen the bank robber and Denzel Washington and Jodie Foster engaging in some skillful sparring matches. (R, for language, violence.)

“The Pink Panther” HH Steve Martin’s comic instincts occasionally strike sparks as Inspector Clouseau in this revival of the classic Peter Sellers character. But this casual movie has a flabby plot and a too-casual approach to slapstick. With Kevin Kline. (PG, for subject matter.)

“The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada” HHHH A wonderful and complex Western directed by and starring Tommy Lee Jones. Both traditional and modern, the film tells of cowboy Jones taking the corpse of a friend down to Mexico. (R, for violence, language, subject matter.)

“Shakespeare Behind Bars” HHH Fascinating documentary about a program in a Kentucky prison that lets inmates put on a production of Shakespeare each year. In learning about “The Tempest”-which comes alive in an urgent way-we also learn about the inmates in the cast. (Not rated; probably R, for language, subject matter.)

“Slither” HH A horror comedy about an alien invasion in a small town, where are sheriff (Nathan Fillion, from “Firefly”) combats hundreds of outer-space slugs. The jokes don’t sit especially well next to the grotesque make-up effects. (R, for violence, language.)

“Stoned” H A depiction of the events leading to the death of Brian Jones (Leo Gregory), whose life as a Rolling Stone is also flashed back to. Jones was an interesting, conflicted guy, but this movie is literal-minded and silly. (R, for nudity, language, subject matter.)

“Thank You for Smoking” HHH Political incorrectness about a spin-doctoring tobacco lobbyist (Aaron Eckhart) and his upside-down logic world. The movie is funny, and has something to say about the political arena now, yet its prankster approach falls short of the best satire, which needs fury. With William H. Macy, Katie Holmes. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story” HHH Michael Winterbottom’s adaptation of Laurence Sterne’s 18th-century novel, but framed by a film being made of the novel-so we watch period scenes interspersed with the actors and filmmakers on the set. Slight but enjoyable, with Steve Coogan etching a funny portrait of a vain, paranoid leading man-himself. (R, for language, subject matter.)

“Who Gets to Call it Art?” HHH A breezy, rapid look at the New York art world of the 1950s-60s, specifically revolving around curator Henry Geldzahler, who championed all manner of modern artists. Good archival footage and a great soundtrack make this fun. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for subject matter.)

“The World’s Fastest Indian” HH A true story of New Zealand’s Burt Munro (Anthony Hopkins), who souped up an old Indian motorcycle and went off to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to try for a speed record. Not much sticks to the ribs here, but the film exudes affection and the Bonneville location shooting is cool. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
