Movie reviews
“The Aviator” HHH Near-three-hour telling of the life of Howard Hughes, aviation pioneer, Hollywood mogul, and obsessive, with Leonardo DiCaprio growing into the role as he goes. Director Martin Scorsese is drunk on the lavish sets and costumes, and the scenes are well-made, but the movie is more of a good subject than a good story. With Cate Blanchett as Katharine Hepburn. (PG-13, for violence, language, nudity.)
“Beyond the Sea” HH Screen bio of Bobby Darin, the short-lived pop star who married teen queen Sandra Dee. Kevin Spacey directs and plays Darin-with enormous energy-and his one-man band approach focuses on the music, which is fine, rather than drama, which is not. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Blade: Trinity” HH Part three of the vampire-hunter saga returns Wesley Snipes to battle Count Dracula himself. Badly directed, but the script has some funny one-liners coming from slacker guy Ryan Reynolds, with Jessica Biel providing the warrior-girl stuff. (R, for violence, language.)
“Finding Neverland” HHH Fictionalized story of J.M. Barrie (Johnny Depp), and how he might have come to write “Peter Pan” after befriending a family of boys and their lonely mother (Kate Winslet). A bit too literal in its life-into-art ideas, but the movie will definitely bring on the sniffles. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Hotel Rwanda” HHHH It makes its points somewhat bluntly, but what a story this movie has to tell: it’s based on the real-life experiences of Paul Rusesabagina, a hotel manager in Rwanda, who in the 1994 massacres protected refugees in his building. Don Cheadle gives a heroic performance. (PG-13, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“House of Flying Daggers” HHH From director Zhang Yimou, a color-soaked story of love and action in the time of the Tang dynasty. It’s a sweet confection rather than a filling meal, but a fun exercise. (In Mandarin, with English subtitles.) (PG-13, for violence.)
“The Incredibles” HHHH Terrific Pixar feature about a family of superheroes, who come out of forced retirement when needed. The action-movie element keeps it shy of the “Finding Nemo” benchmark, but it’s got wonderful characters and impeccable comic timing. (PG, for violence.)
Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events” HHH Based on the first three of the best-selling childrens books, this is the dreadful saga of the Baudelaire orphans, who are constantly at the mercy of wicked Count Olaf (Jim Carrey). The movie doesn’t quite follow through, but it has genuinely weird moments, and Carrey is terrific. (PG, for violence, subject matter.)
“Million Dollar Baby” HHHH A wise, patient, and extremely moving film about a boxing trainer (Clint Eastwood) who reluctantly tutors a young woman (Hilary Swank). Eastwood also directed, transforming the old-fashioned material into a wonderfully gentle tale. With Morgan Freeman. (PG-13, for violence, language.)
“The Motorcycle Diaries” HHHH Before he became a world revolutionary, Che Guevara set out on an eight-month trip along the length of South America, with a buddy and a dubious motorcycle. This movie takes a somewhat romantic view of the journey, but it’s a great road movie and an absorbing character study. Directed by Walter Salles. (In Spanish, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)
“Napoleon Dynamite” HHHH Funny and sweet and weird, this movie chronicles the life of a high-school student in a small town in Idaho. He is Napoleon (Jon Heder), who lives in a heightened state of aggressive cluelessness that has made him an outcast. Director Jared Hess treats this bizarre world with a precisely observed humor that is never cruel. (PG, for subject matter.)
“National Treasure” HH A completely stupid Jerry Bruckheimer production about a “DaVinci Code” -like search for hidden treasure, the chief clue residing on the back of the Declaration of Independence. The movie’s surprisingly entertaining if you go with it. Nicolas Cage stars. (PG, for violence.)
“Ocean’s Twelve” HHH The thieving gang from “Ocean’s Eleven” returns, this time in Europe, in an outing breezier than the first. George Clooney is still the ringleader, but he cedes most of the screen time to Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones. (PG-13, for language.)
“The Phantom of the Opera” HH Lavish adaptation of the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical version, and more of a document of the show than a movie in its own right. The production is hampered by a Phantom (Gerard Butler) who doesn’t sing well, although the film’s romantic Christine (Emmy Rossum) is a plus. (PG-13, for violence.)
“The Polar Express” HHH A super-production adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book. Rendered entirely in computer animation that realistically replicates human beings (notably Tom Hanks), the movie should delight kids, although it’s more amusement-park ride than gentle bedtime story. (G)
“Purple Butterfly” HH The story’s set in early-1930s Shanghai, as the Japanese try to move in and an underground Chinese resistance group fights back. The actual story, however, is mystifying, as director Ye Lou plays scenes in what seems to be random order. Zhang Ziyi stars. (In Mandarin, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“Racing Stripes” H A pet zebra wants to be a thoroughbred racehorse. We know this because the animals talk, in a movie that has a plea for tolerance and lots of poop jokes. It’s pretty lame, despite the celebrity voices for the animals (Dustin Hoffman, Whoopi Goldberg, Frankie Muniz). (PG, for subject matter.)
“Ray” HHH Musical biopic of Ray Charles, with Jamie Foxx giving a spectacular performance (with Charles’ vocals). The movie ties up Charles’ traumas a little neatly, but otherwise it’s a brisk and funny tribute to a man who triumphed over blindness, poverty, and his own demons. Taylor Hackford directed. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Sideways” HHHH Two old friends road-trip for a week in the Santa Barbara wine country, sampling vintages and meeting women. This melancholy comedy is full of keen observations, good wine talk, and some slapstick, and it’s beautifully acted by a cast led by Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden Church. (R, for language, nudity.)
“6ixtynin9” HHH A young woman finds a box of cash, then fights for her life against gangsters who want it back-as the body count steadily rises. A deadpan performance by Lalita Panyopas keeps this very clever Thai film alive. (In Thai, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)
“Spanglish” HH A wealthy L.A. family is changed by the arrival of a Mexican housekeeper (Paz Vega) and her daughter. This meandering dramedy from James L. Brooks comes out flat and shapeless, despite the best efforts of Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni. (PG-13, for subject matter, language.)
“The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” HH A so-so film adaptation of the smash cartoon TV series, about a sponge and a starfish and their journey into the live-action world. Pretty bizarre, but the movie is at its best when concentrating on the small jokes around the original characters (a collection of guest voices, including Alec Baldwin, doesn’t pay off). (PG, for subject matter.)
“Surviving Christmas” H Ben Affleck is a wealthy advertising guy who offers a schlumpy family $250,000 if he can spend the holidays with them. The thin premise never goes far enough to qualify as black comedy, although the cast gives it a spirited try. With James Gandolfini. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“A Tale of Two Sisters” HHH An overlong but atmospheric horror picture that should intrigue fans of “The Ring.” Two teenage sisters go to stay at their father’s country house, but something is very wrong from the start. (In Korean, with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably R, for violence.)
“A Very Long Engagement” HHH A World War I tale from “Amelie” director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, about a woman (Audrey Tatou) determined to find her lost lover. Jeunet’s toybox style doesn’t exactly fit the gravity of the setting, but it makes the movie bouncy to watch. (In French, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception” HH This documentary critical of the media’s coverage of the Iraq war swings a little too wildly at its targets, and director Danny Schechter doesn’t wear well as the Michael Moore-style presenter. But it scores points on the way Hollywood-style marketing was employed by the military in its presentation of the war. (Not rated; probably R, for violence, subject matter.)
“The Woodsman” HHH A hard, cold look at a pedophile, played by Kevin Bacon, released into the world after 12 years in prison. The movie is well made without being in any way pleasant, and has good performances from Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, and Mos Def. (R, for language, violence, nudity.)
