Movie reviews
“13 Going on 30” HH An unremarkable comedy, but a fun coming-out party for a new Hollywood star, Jennifer Garner, who plays a 13-year-old girl transported to a 30-year-old’s life. Garner plays it with abandon, even if the plot keeps intruding. With Mark Ruffalo. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Bon Voyage” HHH As the Germans are swarming over France, a group of people criss-cross paths in Bordeaux. This farce if insubstantial, but given the great cast and the deft coincidences, it’s fun to watch. With Isabelle Adjani, Gerard Depardieu. (In French, with English subtitles.) (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Connie and Carla” HH Nia Vardalos and Toni Collette play lounge singers who pretend to be female impersonators. “Greek Wedding” gal Vardalos wrote the script, which is sitcom stuff but often a fun tribute to/spoof of Broadway show tunes. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Ella Enchanted” HHH In the vein of “Shrek,” a medieval comedy with plenty of anachronistic jokes. This is about a girl (Anne Hathaway) cursed with total obedience, who tries to get her spell reversed; the usual cute prince, wicked stepmother, and evil ruler are also around. (PG, for subject matter.)
“Envy” H A mild idea given a modest treatment: Ben Stiller is distraught when his neighbor (Jack Black) achieves enormous success with an idiotic invention. The performers (including Christopher Walken) are given lots of leash by director Barry Levinson. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)
“Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” HHH From “Adaptation” writer Charlie Kaufman comes this tale of a man (Jim Carrey, in a lovely performance) trying to medically erase the memory of a love affair. The comedy doesn’t quite work, but the film is inventively visualized and creates a sustained melancholy mood. (R, for language, subject matter.)
“Godsend” H Bereaved couple Greg Kinnear and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos clone their dead son, which works fine until the lad passes the age at which the first son died. Robert De Niro tags along for this unsubtle horror picture. (PG-13, for violence, language, subject matter.)
“Good Bye, Lenin!” HHH Devilish satire about the heady days of change in East Berlin in 1989. The premise, occasionally forced, is that a son tries to hide the collapse of communism from his invalid mother, to spare her the shock of seeing her socialist dream replaced by Coca-Cola trucks. (In German, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter.)
“Home on the Range” HH A Disney animated feature about some dairy cows in the old west trying to capture an outlaw. The songs are scarce, the characters are tepid, and the action doesn’t pick up until the second half of its brief 76 minutes. (PG, for subject matter.)
“I’m Not Scared” HHH In the Italian countryside in the late seventies, a 10-year-old boy comes across a kidnapped child trapped in a pit. This dark fable works up suspense and spookiness in convincing fashion. (In Italian, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)
“In America” HHH An Irish family comes to New York City, where the struggle to get over the loss of a son colors their struggle to succeed in the new country. Jim Sheridan’s emotional journey is beautifully acted, especially by Samantha Morton and Paddy Considine. (PG-13, for subject matter, language.)
“Kill Bill Vol. 2” HHH The conclusion of Quentin Tarantino’s homage to B-movies (masquerading as a revenge opus), in which the Bride (Uma Thurman) knocks off her tormentors, especially mastermind Bill (David Carradine). A languid movie with more conversation than ultraviolence, this mad enterprise could only have been made by one person. (R, for violence, language.)
“The Ladykillers” HHH A remake of the 1955 English comedy about hapless criminals working a plan in the home of an elderly lady (Irma P. Hall). The Coen brothers capture many brilliant moments, although a certain flatness creeps in. Tom Hanks has great fun in a very eccentric performance. (R, for language.)
“Laws of Attraction” HH Julianne Moore and Pierce Brosnan are New York divorce attorneys who put aside their bickering long enough to flirt. A perfectly nice movie-Moore is especially delightful in a rare comedic role-but it’s lacking a subplot; it’s all sugar. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“Man on Fire” HH Denzel Washington gives a professional performance as a burned-out CIA assassin hired to protect a little girl (Dakota Fanning) in Mexico City. Director Tony Scott bungles the premise by indulging in distracting TV commercial style. With Christopher Walken, Radha Mitchell. (R, for violence, language.)
“Mean Girls” HHH Funny high-school comedy about the cruelties of teenage girls, with Lindsay Lohan as the innocent caught up in the super-clique at her school. Tina Fey’s script backs off to deliver some lectures on decency, but it’s got a good ear for lingo and absurdities. (PG-13, for subject matter.)
“The Punisher” HH The Marvel comic-book character comes to the screen, with a quirky humor and some pulp grandness-but dull villains and an overly brutal revenge story. Tom Jane plays the non-superpower hero, out to exact revenge on crime boss John Travolta (who’s done this kind of thing too often). (R, for violence, language.)
“Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” H A dull sequel brings back the cast members, but seems more intent on curing their self-esteem than making the audience laugh. This feels like one of those movies where the sets were designed before the script was written. (PG, for violence, subject matter.)
“Shaolin Soccer” HHH A high-spirited slapstick comedy about a kung fu-influenced soccer team. Star-director Stephen Chow keeps the sight gags coming, even if the movie becomes a standard sports feature in its second half. (In Cantonese, with English subtitles.) (PG-13, for violence.)
“Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter…and Spring” HHHH A Korean film set entirely around a small monastery floating in the middle of a lake. Each chapter corresponds to a season, and the movie is full of surprising details-it truly seems to capture a life cycle, but never in a precious way. (In Korean, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, nudity.)
“Super Size Me” HHH Morgan Spurlock decided to eat three meals a day at McDonald’s for a month and document the results. He takes some getting used to, but this movie, which also looks at the pervasiveness of fast food in general, is an entertaining and alarming picture. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for nudity, language.)
“Touching the Void” HHHH A riveting docu-drama about a real-life mountain climb in the Peruvian Andes in 1985. Joe Simpson and Simon Yates narrate their hair-raising escape from the mountain, which involved a broken leg, a howling storm, and incredible survival instincts. (Not rated, probably PG-13, for language.)
“The Triplets of Belleville” HHH Wildly and darkly imaginative animated film by a French director, Sylvain Chomet. The dizzying plot has to do with a cyclist in the Tour de France who is kidnapped and taken away to a giant metropolis. (PG-13, for subject.)
“Van Helsing” H The vampire-hunter (Hugh Jackman) from the old Universal monster movies is called up to fight Dracula, the Frankenstein monster, and assorted werewolves. A loud, nonstop carnival of digital effects, many of which are dazzling, if only you had a chance to enjoy them. (PG-13, for violence, subject matter.)
“Wilbur” HHHH Lovely film about a suicidal Glasgow man, his patient brother, and the meek woman who loves them both. It’s a comedy, and very nicely done by director Lone Scherfig. (R, for language, subject)
“Young Adam” HH In 1950s Scotland, a would-be writer (Ewan McGregor) works on a barge and seduces every woman in sight. Technically well done and acted, but a pretentious movie. With Tilda Swinton. (NC-17, for nudity, language, subject matter.)
