Have you got a bee in your bonnet about getting your own backyard honey bees, but aren’t sure if you’d be comfortable around hundreds of buzzing insects?
Here is the course for you.
Beekeeping 101, a Washington State Beekeepers Association apprentice-level course, will be offered from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on five Tuesdays, July 12 to Aug. 16 (except July 26) at Woodway Hall, Room 105, Edmonds Community College, 20000 68th Ave. W., Lynnwood.
The $125 cost includes a Washington State Beekeepers Apprentice manual.
Snohomish County master gardeners Jeff Thompson and Pete Wolcott, both experienced beekeepers, will teach the class, designed to include hands-on experience tending live hives.
Labs will include hive inspections. Participants will have a chance to collect, and later extract, honey from hives.
Students will learn how to prepare now and this winter for new hives in the spring, including what to buy and what not to buy when getting started.
