‘Snow White’ lets kids get in the action

“Snow White”: In StoryBook Theater’s version of this classic children’s story, our heroine tries and tries but she never can seem to please the Queen.

The Queen complains that the castle isn’t sparkling clean, the apple pies are too tart, and Snow White never can polish the mirror well enough to properly reflect the Queen’s beauty.

What can Snow White do and what can seven silly men do to keep her safe and out of the Queen’s way?

The story was adapted by StoryBook Theater writer, director and founder Lani Brockman, with music and lyrics by Susan Bardsley.

StoryBook productions are designed for maximum audience participation because the goal is to teach little ones proper theater etiquette. Before each performance, Bardsley addresses the audience about when it’s appropriate for the children to talk and get involved, and when they should be quiet and listen to the show.

The sets are large “story books” that have pages which turn for the set changes, letting children fill in the blanks with their imaginations, the show’s creators say.

Brockman also ensures that all StoryBook Theater shows are violence-free. Anything scary in the original fairy tale is changed to something funny or zany. Past productions are good examples of this such as in the “Three Pigs,” the Big Bad Wolf was a vegetarian, and the Piggies build their houses from drinking “straws” and “stickers.”

“Snow White” performs at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Saturday and 1 and 3 p.m. Sunday at the Snohomish County PUD Auditorium, 2320 California St., Everett. All Tickets are $9. Call 877-827-1100 or go to www.StoryBookTheater.org. Recommended for ages 3 to 10 and families.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie”: Millie is here to bring in the Roaring ’20s.

The South Whidbey High School in collaboration with the Whidbey Children’s Theater is presenting this classic musical that tells the story of a small-town girl, Millie Dillmount, who comes to New York City to marry for money instead of love.

More than 40 students are involved in this production which is full of dancing and singing and sets from the 1920s. This production is directed by Dana Linn and Suzanne Kelman, with set design by Jim Scullin and Tom Harris and light design by Rod Stewart.

“Thoroughly Modern Millie” opens at 7:30 tonight and runs for two weekends with matinees at 2 p.m. Nov. 1 and Nov. 8; Nov. 5 is family night with all tickets $5. Tickets for all other shows are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at the door, at South Whidbey High School Auditorium, 5675 S. Maxwelton Road, Langley. For more information call Whidbey Children’s Theater at 360-221-8707.
