EVERETT — Pacifica Chamber Orchestra director Fred Chu wants to offer his audience the opportunity to hear some lesser-known German composers.
Pacifica’s season opener Sunday afternoon at First Presbyterian in Everett includes works by Robert Volkmann and Theodor Blumer.
The program includes Volkmann’s “Serenade for Strings,” No. 2, and Blumer’s “Sextet” for woodwind quintet and piano.
Volkmann was a contemporary of Johannes Brahms, and his exciting serenade contains “no slow movement or even a slow melody,” said Chu.
Blumer, a modern composer, creates a pastoral and romantic scene with his sextet, Chu said.
The second half features the emotional “Sospiri” for strings by famed British composer Edward Elgar and finishes with “String Sextet,” No. 3, arranged for string orchestra by Russian composer Reinhold Glière.
“It’s a gigantic piece by the forgotten great Russian composer, with all the sonority and flavor of Russia,” Chu said.
This seventh season of performances by the chamber orchestra is sponsored in part by the Everett Cultural Arts Commission.
Pacifica Chamber Orchestra is a non-profit organization that performs five subscription concerts each season in Everett along with outreach concerts for elementary students throughout Snohomish County.
