After 12 weeks of gratis entertainment in a weekly series of podcasts, “The Ricky Gervais Show” today started charging for each half-hour episode, and it’s left some fans more than a little annoyed.
Ther emight be a little confusion, because the show is no longer a “podcast” in the strictest definition. On Apple’s iTunes Music Store, it’s found among the audiobooks and each episode is a “book” that costs $1.95. On Audible.com, users can buy the next four episodes for $6.95.
But the show that drew record numbers of listeners and was an absolute sensation is probably still drawing enough folks who are willing to fork over some cash, but many think the price is not right.
“The show is genius,” wrote one user on iTunes. “The talent amazing. Re-think the pricing. Too much competition with other content, which is free. I’ll pass.”
Other fans are more than happy to pay the fee.
Having listened to every one of the first dozen episodes, which were downright hilarious, I can attest that while listening to the first “pay” version I expected more. It’s just as funny and just as entertaining, but I find myself expecting a little more out of it.
Here’s hoping the price comes down to at least 99 cents per episode, which will make it far more tolerable and probably double the paying audience from the first episode.
