WHAT: Deutzia gracilis, an upright deciduous shrub native to Japan, is easy to grow in the Puget Sound region.
It produces lance-shaped leaves and small, star-shaped pure-white flowers that envelope its form for about three weeks in spring. Wait until it is finished flowering to prune away dead wood or to reshape it.
SUN OR SHADE: It blooms best with full-sun exposure. However, it tolerates part shade well.
SIZE: It is slow growing, eventually reaching 3 to 4 feet tall and wide.
SEE IT: You can find this plant at the Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens — 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett; www.evergreenarboretum.com; 425-257-8597 — past the shade garden on the left as you move south through the arboretum.
