What: Kerria japonica
This decidious shrub, also called “Pleniflora,” is a spectacular addition to the early spring garden as its bright yellow pom-pom blooms are in full display from March through April. It is a fast-growing deciduous shrub that is native to certain mountainous areas of Japan and China. Named for William Kerr from the Royal Botanic Gardens, as it was he who brought it to England in the 1700s. This shrub has been used in American gardens prior to the Civil War era and continues to thrill gardeners every year with its early colorful double yellow blooms.
Sun or shade: It will thrive in full sun to part shade.
Size: This shrub is fast growing and at maturity will be 8 to 10 feet tall and wide.
