WHAT: Tropicana canna is one of the most exotic cannas ever introduced.
Although it sports a bright orange flower, it is usually grown for its beautifully striped leaves.
When back-lit by the sun, they resemble stained glass and their pink, red and green veins are eye-catching.
Protect canna, which dies back in the winter, by layering its spent leaves over the its perennial crown. Secure them with rocks to keep them in place. This will deflect rain and guard the crown from low temperatures.
SUN OR SHADE: Cannas prefer full sun.
SIZE: Cannas can reach 5 to 6 feet tall, adding vertical as well as tropical interest to the garden.
SEE IT: This plant is now in bloom near the Japanese maple grove at the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, www.evergreen arboretum.com.
