WHAT: Orangeola is an exceptional selection of the lace-leaf Japanese maples.
The new spring leaves are bright orange-red when they first emerge and retain an orange undertone as they fade to a summertime red-green.
The foliage color is enhanced by a second flush of orange-red new growth in midsummer.
Fall color tends to be in dramatic fiery tones of red and orange.
WHY: This shrubby tree is not as wide-spreading as other forms of lace-leaf maples, making it an excellent selection for containers.
Well-pruned Japanese maples require an expert touch, so consult an experienced pruner or take local classes before attempting to prune.
To reduce the need for pruning, place these wide spreading plants in areas will ample room.
WHERE: This weeping tree foliage color produces its best color in full sun to open shade. Japanese maples are flexible in their soil requirements.
Although they will grow best in a rich well-drained soil, they will also do well in sandy soils and clay.
To prevent the fine leaves from burning at the tips, water the tree regularly during dry weather.
SIZE: Acer palmatum will reach 4- to 8-feet high and spread from 3- to 7-feet wide.
