WHAT: Beautyberry is a deciduous shrub that features bronze-colored foliage in spring that turns green in summer, followed by pale, pink midsummer flowers and, finally, pinkish-purple foliage in fall.
WHY PLANT IT: This compact shrub’s best feature, however, is its otherworldly dark-violet berries that put on a fantastic show against bare autumn branches.
Even young plants of this variety of callicarpa bodinieri, known as Profusion, will bear dense clusters of berries.
WHERE: Beautyberry prefers full sun or part shade and grows best in fertile, well-drained soil.
HOW: Water it regularly for its first two growing seasons and during subsequent summer dry spells.
ACTUAL SIZE: In 10 years, beautyberry reaches about 6 feet high and wide.
