WHAT: Boxleaf azara is a small shrubby tree that produces little yellow pompon flowers that release a sweet vanilla scent.
Its dark green foliage is glossy, evergreen and held tightly on spraylike branches for an airy effect.
WHY PLANT IT: It grows well on the north side of a structure and in bright woodland.
Its open habit and fine texture are attractive in the shade garden, too.
Azara trees produce insignificant light brown fruits that are edible but not very tasty.
WHERE: This plant, also known as azara microphylla, grows best in part shade with average moisture in any well-drained soil.
HOW: If the plant becomes overgrown and too leggy, it will respond to severe pruning, even pruning nearly to the ground if such a drastic treatment is deemed necessary.
ACTUAL SIZE: This narrow-growing small evergreen tree matures at about 15 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide.
