Redleaf shrub rose, also known as rosa glauca, features reddish-mauve foliage that is resistant to black spot, a common plight for roses in the Northwest. Small clusters of single pink flowers with gold centers cover this deciduous shrub in late spring and early summer. In autumn, scarlet hips provide late-season interest in addition to attracting wildlife. It grows best in full sun and is drought tolerant once established. It can be cut to the ground seasonally to conserve space, but it will not flower if pruned that way, because it blooms on the previous year’s growth. Its arching habit makes it ideal for the rear of the border, where it can ultimately reach 6 feet high and 5 feet wide.
