WHAT: Dwarf balsam fir, also known as abies balsamea nana, is a good choice for rock gardens and mixed border plantings thanks to its compact size and relatively stout shape.
It features a rich, dense evergreen look with needles that appear to form a dark green cushion.
SUN OR SHADE: It thrives in part shade.
SIZE: Its mature size is a compact 3 feet tall and wide.
SEE IT: You’ll find this dwarf in the conifer display garden at Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett, www.evergreenarboretum.com.
After you pass through the arboretum’s periwinkle entrance columns, turn left and the conifer garden will be on your right.
