WHAT: Epimedium x rubrum is a low-growing evergreen perennial that is often used as a ground cover but also works well as a single specimen.
When cut back in midwinter, it produces red-edged leaves followed by small red flowers set on stems that sway back and forth several inches above the plant.
SUN OR SHADE: There are advantages to both. This plant is happiest in the woodland garden, where it requires minimal water and works well in the front of a border. Putting it in a sunny spot, however, will turn the leaves a lovely bright red after flowering, but the plant will require much more water and attention.
Soil should be rich in organic material such as compost and should have good drainage.
SIZE: It should reach 12 inches tall and 36 inches wide when mature.
SEE IT: You’ll find this gem in dappled shade just as you enter through the periwinkle entrance columns of the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens, 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett.
