What: The Tanyosho pine, sometimes called Japanese umbrella pine or table top pine for its umbrellalike form and flat top, features unusual multistemmed branches. This specimen was pruned by local botanist Emile Van den Akker to create a natural sculpture for the Everett arboretum.
Sun or shade? Also known as pinus densiflora umbraculifera, this tree requires full sun and slightly acidic soil.
Size: Although slow growing, it will reach 12 feet tall and 20 feet wide unless it is pruned to a particular shape.
See it: You can view this specimen at the Evergreen Arboretum &Gardens — 145 Alverson Blvd., Everett; www.evergreenarboretum.com; 425-257-8597 — in the conifer garden to the left of the arboretum entrance columns.
