The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering a boating safety course at 8:30 a.m. today at West Marine, 1716 W. Marine View Drive, Everett.
We know this is short notice, but you can simply show up.
Because of recent changes in boating laws, boaters 30 years old and younger will be required to obtain boater education cards by Dec. 31, 2010. In 2011, it will be boaters 35 or younger. This phased-in period for compliance will continue until 2016 for various age groups.
Boaters born before Jan. 1, 1955, are exempt from having to obtain a card.
Attendees will learn basic boating information and instruction on safety equipment, boat handling and trailering. Federal and state requirements for boating will also be presented in the class, which costs $30 and includes a course book.
Learn more about the new law at www.boat-ed.com or www.americanboating.org. Contact Richard Gibson at 425-670-0364 or write rgibson701@comcast.net for more information about the class.
