As always, when Forum cooks see an SOS, recently the dirt cake how-to from Edmonds reader Doris Hoblitt, they go full speed into the search and, faster than scat, copy off and send along their favorite recipes.
While this process was well underway, though, Doris had not yet given up hope of tracking down her gone-missing version.
“I wrote you asking for a dirt cake recipe,” she tells us today. “Well, I found mine after all, so am sending a copy to you in case someone else might be interested. In place of a flower pot, I use a kid-size sand pail and shovel.”
Let’s start with the found-it recipe, then have Camano Island cook Jane T. Paton’s how-to for dirt ‘n worms.
Found-it dirt cake
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup powdered sugar
2 small packages instant vanilla pudding mix
2 3/4 cups milk
1 container (12 ounces) frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 package (15.35 ounces) Oreo cookies
1 package gummy worms
8-inch flower pot or kid-size sand pail
Garden trowel or kid-size shovel
Silk flowers
In a mixing bowl, cream together the cream cheese, butter and powdered sugar. In a separate bowl, combine pudding mix and milk, then fold in the butter mixture and whipped topping. Crush the cookies in a blender or food processor.
To assemble, in the flower pot or sand pail, layer the cookies, pudding mixture and gummy worms, beginning and ending with the cookies. Decorate with flowers and serve with the trowel or shovel.
Dirt ‘n worms
1 small package instant chocolate pudding mix
1 container (8 ounces) frozen chocolate whipping topping, thawed
1 package (15.35 ounces) Oreo cookies, finely crushed
Gummy worms
Suitable containers
In a mixing bowl, prepare the pudding mix according to package directions. Fold in the whipped topping, then fold in three-quarters of the crushed cookies (this is the dirt). Put in the containers and stick in the gummy worms. Sprinkle tops with the rest of the “dirt.”
