Red Curtain Spectaculathon has theater, music, radio and improv

MARYSVILLE — The Red Curtain Foundation is hosting a fun mix of entertainment in July.

The Red Curtain’s Summer Spectaculathon performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays beginning July 7 at the Red Curtain Arts Center in Marysville.

The first festival weekend, July 7 and 8, features a staged reading of the one-act play “Art” by Yasmina Reza. Three long-time friends, played by local actors Scott Hibbert, Liam Cole and Robert MacDougall, explore the meaning and impact of “art” when one of the men buys an expensive abstract all-white painting, much to the dismay of the others. Directed by Scott B Randall.

Music takes over the arts center July 14 and 15, as four local rock/blues/Americana bands perform. Friday night features Holy Jim and The Ginger Ups, while Saturday’s lineup is Cool &Groovy and Band of Uncles.

The creative team of local dramatists and comedians Nick Poling and Alex De Roest — the minds behind Red Curtain’s “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” — will present an original comedy radio show, “Damien Anto, Master Thief,” on July 21 and 22.

In this tale of adventure and crime set in 18th century Europe, we follow Damien, a world-famous burglar, accompanied by his skittish servant, Sganarelle, as they break into the manors of nobles, run from the law and race rivals to the greatest treasure of all time. “The fast-fleeing, always-thieving, sight-seeing, wall-leaping, maiden-cheating, ever-scheming vagabond and grandest criminal to ever trot the hot sands of Zanzibar — Damien Anto, Master Thief!”

Finally, Western Washington University’s award-winning sketch comedy troupe The Dead Parrots Society offers zany improvisational theatre on July 28 and 29. Dead Parrots Society specializes in long-form comedic improv, and the accomplished students regularly perform on and off campus.

As a bonus, the Foundation’s Beckye Randall says Red Curtain Art Center’s air conditioning system is now operational, and the concession stand offerings include beer and wine.

Relax and enjoy.
