Four students named aerospace scholars

Christopher Curulla, Alexander Kim and Rishi Trivedi of Mariner High School and Stephen Trent of Kamiak High School are among 247 juniors throughout the state to be accepted into the first phase of the Washington Aerospace Scholars program.

The students will participate in a distance-learning program that uses a NASA-designed curriculum about the history of space exploration, the space shuttle program, the International Space Station and other topics.

They also will compete for acceptance in a summer program at the Museum of Flight in Seattle, where the students will work with professionals to plan a human mission to Mars.

School benefit for Haiti

St. Thomas More Parish School in Lynnwood recently had Free Dress for Haiti days.

In total, the students raised $1,200 just for Free Dress and are still raising money with a coin drive.

All proceeds will be donated to Catholic Relief Services.

Granite Falls names two alumni hall-of-famers

Raylene Alexander, class of 1980, and Ed Horn, class of 1958, were named to the Granite Falls High School Alumni Hall of Fame on Feb. 5. The Hall of Fame was established in 1994 to honor past graduates who were active in school activities and have gone on to become positive role models.

Horn was a two-year basketball letterman and three-year track letterman. He was senior class president, a member of the Big G Club and participated in choir and drama. After graduation, he served four years in the Navy and as a Granite Falls School District School Board member from 1981 to 1987.

Alexander was a member of the HI-Q team, Future Farmers of America, chess club and tennis club. After graduation, she enlisted in the Marine Corps and received a master’s degree in science from Emory-Riddle Aeronautical University.

She is currently an assistant professor at Kansas State University. She started the Jet Ahead mentoring program for college and high school students. Alexander is a volunteer with 31 Kansas high schools in the Kansas Science Olympiad and volunteers in a program that introduces inner-city students to higher education.

Terrace Park students raise money for Haiti

Students at Terrace Park Elementary in Mountlake Terrace recently raised more than $2,000 for disaster-related aid in Haiti.

The students presented a check for $2,062.52 to World Concern on Feb. 4 during their Wolf Pride Assembly.

The students raised the money over a period of three days.

Everett resident on honor list

Everett resident Brittany Jeanice was recently named to the honor list at Northwestern State University of Louisiana.

Students on the honor roll must be enrolled full-time at Northwestern and have a grade point average of between 3.0 and 3.49. A total of 1,073 students at Northwestern State University of Louisiana were named to the honor list for the 2009 fall semester.

Arlington bands in concert

More than 200 band students took the stage at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center in Arlington on Feb. 9 when Arlington High School bands were joined by Haller and Post middle schools’ eighth-grade bands for their annual combined winter band concert.

Arlington High School’s band director, John Grabowski, opened the concert with the 51-member freshman concert band.

Joe Horsak directed Haller Middle School’s 42-member eighth-grade band. Post Middle School’s Kipp Otterness led his eighth-grade group of 45 students. Grabowski then conducted the two eighth-grade bands.

The high school’s symphonic band and the wind ensemble also performed.

The concert is offered for eighth-grade band students and parents to introduce them to the upper-grade-level programs.

Everett architecture student earns scholarship

Hung Ngo received an $800 Richard Garrison Memorial Scholarship from the Washington State University School of Architecture and Construction Management.

Ngo graduated from Cascade High School in 2004 and received his associate degree in arts and science from Everett Community College. He is currently a junior at WSU studying architecture. Ngo is expected to graduate in 2011.

He is the son of Lan Pham and Thinh Ngo of Everett.

Mill Creek resident earns honor from Gonzaga

Kyle Ryan of Mill Creek was among the 987 undergraduate students named to the Gonzaga University president’s list for the fall semester.

Students must earn a 3.7 or better grade-point-average to be listed.

Rotary honors Mariner senior

The South Everett-Mukilteo Rotary Club named Kurtis Brodhead its student of the month for January.

He represents Mariner High School, one of three local high schools that receive this monthly student recognition from the club. At their recent club meeting, he was presented with a plaque to honor his outstanding academic achievement and service to the community.

Brodhead has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout his high school career. His classes include advanced-placement courses in English, calculus and government.

Kurtis has been active with the Boy Scouts of America since he was 12 and has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. This past fall, he also helped with the National Honors Society’s canned food drive.

After graduation, he plans to continue his job at Arby’s until he turns 19, when he will leave on a two-year mission for his church. He plans to attend Brigham Young University-Idaho.
