Monroe technology students help animals

Members of Monroe High School’s Technology Student Association recently donated time and labor to Pasado’s Safe Haven for animals in Sultan.

Students Lance Rains, John Kershner, Shane Beck, Brady Porter, Nick Barmon and Tanner Wetsch helped build a roof and a cow shed and cleaned out drains. The group’s adviser is Bob Simoni.

Everett resident earns master’s at Concordia U.

Everett resident Lynn Hiblar recently graduated from Concordia University, St. Paul, in St. Paul, Minn. Hiblar earned a master of arts degree in education.

Concordia University, St. Paul, is a private university of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod and one of 10 schools in the Concordia University system. It was established in 1893.

Local students honored at Maryland college

Two Snohomish County residents, Liahna Gonda-King of Mukilteo and Erin Hendrix of Bothell, recently were named to the dean’s list for the spring 2008 semester at St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Dean’s List honors are awarded to full-time students who earn a grade point average of 3.50 or better on 12 or more graded credits.

St. Mary’s is Maryland’s only public honors college.

Bothell residents join elite teaching corps

Four Bothell residents, Devin Branson, Caleb Knedlik, Candace Jessup and Caley Ochoa, recently were selected to join Teach For America, a national corps of recent college graduates who commit to a two-year teaching stint in urban and rural public schools.

They were among roughly 25,000 applicants for the 2008 corps; 20 percent were accepted.

Branson is a 2005 graduate of Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek and a graduate of Western Washington University. Knedlik is a 2004 graduate of Inglemoor High School in Kenmore and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Jessup is a 2004 graduate of Inglemoor High School and a graduate of the University of Kentucky. Ochoa is a 2004 graduate of Cedar Park Christian High School in Bothell and a graduate of Whitworth University in Spokane.

Mill Creek resident chosen for symposium

Mill Creek resident Reece Lumsden, a graduate student in systems engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology, recently was selected to attend the National Academy of Engineers 14th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering Symposium.

Lumsden was nominated by The Boeing Co. for his innovative research and technical work. He is one of 81 engineers selected to attend the symposium. The participants were selected from a group of 230 applicants.

Students perform well at debate conference

Two Snohomish residents who are sophomores at Western Kentucky University and members of the college’s forensic team, recently placed in debate competitions at the Lafayette College Debate Camp in Easton, Pa.

Sarah Spiker was fourth debate speaker. Brandon Merrell was second debate speaker and co-champion in the Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Western Kentucky coaches Brooks Johnson and Justin Cress traveled with the students and served as camp instructors.

Granite Falls school employees honored

Crossroads Alternative High School special services secretary Connie Workman and Middle School sixth-grade teacher Michelle Markwardt recently were named the 2007-08 Granite Falls School District Employees of the Year at a staff ceremony.

Workman has worked for the district for 21 years and Markwardt has worked for the district for eight years.

Employees are recognized for creating a caring learning environment through excellent service to Granite Falls schools

Everett resident named to dean’s list

Everett resident Ellen McDonnell recently was named to the Dean’s List at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., for the 2008 spring semester. To make the dean’s list, students must post grade point averages of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.

St. Thomas is an independent, liberal arts Catholic university founded in 1885.

Snohomish resident named to dean’s list

Snohomish resident Ashley Julian recently was named to the dean’s list at Eastern Oregon University for spring 2008 term. To qualify for the dean’s list, students must achieve and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale while completing a minimum of 12 hours of graded coursework.

Eastern Oregon University is in La Grande, Ore.

Middle-schoolers honored in Monroe

Monroe Middle School staff members recently announced the school’s top scholars for the fourth quarter in the 2007-08 school year. The students earned a grade point average of 3.5 or better.
