Mukilteo teams off to global finals

Two teams from the Mukilteo School District took first place at the Destination ImagiNation State Tournament in `Wenatchee.

Destination ImagiNation is a creative, problem solving and engineering club that focuses on out-of-the-box thinking.
The Mukilteo Elementary team, Nuclear Purple Pickles, competed in the Central Challenge-Triple Take Road Show. The team consists of Harvey Lewis, Alexander Ong, Emma Harrison, Maci Govertsen, Erika Sears, Grace Duffy and Molly Goodrich.

Endeavor Elementary’s Team Awesome competed in the

Central Challenge- Mythology Mission. Team members are Rachel Ponting, Cameron Weaver, Alex Lam, Alex Hyung, Griffen Gonzalez and May Li.

Both teams have been invited to compete at the Global Finals in Knoxville, Tenn., with more than 1,000 other teams from 30 different countries. The teams are working to raise money for this trip through garage and bake sales.

Snohomish graduate wins machining title

Sean Johnson of Snohomish earned the gold medal in precision machining at the State Post-Secondary SkillsUSA conference and contest.

The precision machining contest was held last month at Lake Washington Technical College.

Johnson graduated from Glacier Peak High School in 2010 and attends Renton Technical College. He will be competing at the national SkillsUSA precision machining contest in Kansas City, Mo., this summer.

Arlington students get top scores

Four Arlington High School students received exceptional PSAT scores and advanced through the process in the National Merit Scholarship Competition.

The students are: Jessie Rard, Sara Deeter, Robert Kephart and Molly Rard.

Their scores placed them in the top 1 percent in the nation for the class of 2012.

Everett Rotary honors students

The Rotary Club of Everett named high school seniors Anthony Chiarelli, Steven Coombs and Caitlin Kocuhakji as Rotary Students of the Month for March.

Anthony is a Cascade High School student who plans to pursue a journalism degree at Western Washington University, then teach English. He has volunteered in the school’s food drive and enjoys poetry, piano, English literature and history.

Steven is associated student body president at Everett High School. He competes in track and cross-country and plans to continue in those sports at Seattle Pacific University, majoring in physical therapy and minoring in coaching. Steven plans to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Washington.

Caitlin, a senior at Archbishop Murphy High School, is senior class secretary and plans to attend Western Washington University to study biology and global health. Caitlin has lived in Mukilteo for eight years and competes as a sprinter on the swim team.

Snohomish students top problem solvers

Students and teams from schools across the Snohomish School District recently took top places in the Washington Future Problem Solving State Bowl.

Top team finishers in the Junior Team category were:

First place, Little Cedars Elementary: Chris Bianchini, Malakai Fifita, Evan Brees and Mayank Motukuri.

Second place, Riverview Elementary: Cassie Volkle, Madison VanAssche, Maggie Thunselle and Josh Ren.

Third place, Dutch Hill Elementary: Corbin Ditto, Nicolas Cassaday, Jordan Miller and Maryanne Proffit.

The Little Cedars Elementary team has been invited to the International Conference at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

Other top district finishers included:

Tyler Roth of Dutch Hill Elementary took first place in the Junior Individual category.

Griffin Miller, Alicia Fanning, Linda Haataja and Jason Fairhurst of Dutch Hill Elementary took first place in the Junior Best Presentation.

Aleah DeSchmidt, Mari Hsieh and Allie Curtis of Little Cedars Elementary took second place in the Junior Best Presentation.

Mia Fleming, Bella D’Angelo, Octavian Culiac and Tyler Tanta of Little Cedars Elementary took third place the Junior Best Presentation.

Quinlan Ingalls, Payton Jorgensen, Kristin Ringstad and Michael Schonhard of Valley View Middle School took second place in the Intermediate Best Presentation.

Everett woman an Excelsior grad

Michelle Sifuentes of Everett has earned an associate degree in nursing from Excelsior College in Albany, N.Y.
