Jackson student an aerospace scholar

Daphne (Danfeng) Wei, a junior at Henry M. Jackson High School, is one of 260 students in Washington who have been accepted into the first phase of Washington Aerospace Scholars.

During the first phase, Daphne and 259 colleagues are participating in a NASA-designed curriculum covering the history of space exploration, the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station, the moon and Mars.

The scholars will complete 10 lessons through May and will select a topic of interest for a final project.

Stanwood-Camano names ‘shining stars’

Cassie Granger, a 12th-grade student at Lincoln High School, and Reed Jensen, an eighth-grade student at Lincoln Academy, have receive the 2008-09 Stanwood- Camano Board of Directors’ Shining Star Award for working hard and showing that they can overcome challenges.

Cassie is focused in school and working on becoming a nurse. Reed is a leader with a great sense of humor.

The Stanwood-Camano School Board of Directors offers the Shining Star Award to one student at each school during the year acknowledging elementary through high school students for their hard work to overcome challenges and be a positive “shining star” in their school.

Local teams place in ‘green’ competition

Two Snohomish County teams competed in and won top spots at the Northwest Regional Envirothon on March 26 at Mercer Slough Environmental Education Center in Bellevue.

High school kids study and compete in the Washington State Envirothon, an annual natural resources competition, showing their knowledge in the areas of soils and land use, forestry, aquatic ecology, wildlife and a current environmental issue.

The 2009 environmental issue was “Biodiversity in a Changing World.”

Stanwood High School brought a record seven teams to the event, one of which won the first-place trophy.

Monroe’s Sky Valley Tree Huggers, from the Sky Valley Education Center, came in third. The Stanwood team will go on to compete at the state event in May.

Harbour Pointe kids display their caring

The theme for Student of the Month at Harbour Pointe Middle School for March was “caring,” an attribute from the International Baccalaureate Profile.

The following students all showed commitment to service and displayed compassion, empathy and respect toward the needs of others: sixth-grade students Tyler Becker, Matt Bettencourt, Hannah McDonald and Jenna Stupy; seventh-grade students Anthony Berg, Katherine Bosio, Brady Brosius, Sayde Gonzales-Langdon and Jesse Medez-Lopez; and eighth-grade students Paul Barton, Cara Kusilek, Lindsey Marshall and Lucas Sidhu.

Everett educator named to EvCC board

Gov. Christine Gregoire has appointed Betty Cobbs to Everett Community College’s Board of Trustees.

Cobbs’ term will run from 2009 to 2014.

Cobbs, who lives in Everett, is director of human resources focusing on K-12 teacher development and recruitment.

She has worked in the Everett public school system for more than 30 years including time as a teacher and a principal.

She has a bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in administration from Western Washington University and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Washington.

St. John’s junior from Everett on dean’s list

Dylan M. Ronan of Everett has been named to the Dean’s List at St. John’s University in New York. He is a junior majoring in English.

To be included on the dean’s list, students must have a grade point average of at least 3.80.
