Experts from the Seattle Opera will curate and host weekly opera specials on the newly advertising-free King-FM .
The series begins at 8 pm. Saturday with the airing of a classic recording of “Rigoletto,” starring Maria Callas, Tito Gobbi, and Giuseppe di Stefano. The opera’s education director, Sue Elliott, hosts the first night.
Seattle Opera General Director Speight Jenkins, who earlier this week announced that he’ll retire in September 2014, plans to host special previews of each of the scheduled operas from the coming season. The previews will come a week before a live airing of Saturday evening performances from McCaw Hall.
The season opens on Aug. 6 with “Porgy and Bess.” Other operas performed locally are “Carmen,” on Oct. 22, “Attila,” on Jan. 21, “Orphée et Eurydice,” on March 3 and “Madama Butterfly,” on May 12.
The live performances are scheduled to being at 7:30 p.m.
Other upcoming radio highlights include Jenkins introducing a recording of “La Gioconda” on July 2 and Sue Elliott presenting “Così fan tutte” on July 16.
People can listen over the airwaves at 98.1 FM or stream the broadcast online at www.king.org.
