Rocks and gems — pretty to look at and fun to collect.
Visitors to this weekend’s 35th annual Marysville Rock &Gem Club show at Totem Middle School can expect to see not just rocks and gems, but also a collection of extraordinary knives.
One of the show’s displays will include these works of art, Damascus knives, which are designed and etched with patterns such as zebra stripes, Spanish lace and raindrops, club member Anna Calkins said.
In addition to their etchings, the knives have rock and gems worked into their handles.
“It (this type of work) has been a labor of love,” she said.
“What a joy to find just the right stone and produce a work of art from nature’s bounty.”
Another display at the show — featuring a mineral called zoisite — will highlight rare, pink specimens that club members found in Eastern Washington this summer.
The show also will offer a children’s area, maps of local rock and gem collecting sites and demonstrations of techniques such as shaping, polishing, silversmithing and wire wrapping.
