50 years ago (1961)
Shirley Fletcher was the new executive of Pilchuck Council of Camp Fire Girls in Snohomish County. Her selection was unanimously confirmed by the Board of Directors of the county council. The board also announced selection of Evelyn Enwall to be district director for the council here.
City commissioners were introducing a resolution asking for a concrete center curbing on Broadway from Everett Avenue north to 12th Street. Included in the proposal would be a program of no left turns for the north- and soundbound traffic on Broadway. One fourth of all city accidents happened on the thoroughfare.
25 years ago (1986)
Navy Secretary John Lehman was to visit Everett this month, bolstered by a major victory in the U.S. Senate for his plan to build a warship base here as well as others around the country. Lehman’s schedule included a press conference and private reception at the home of Helen Jackson, widow of the late Sen. Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson.
Paine Field, named for Topliff Olin Paine, started as a small general aviation airfield. During World War II it became a busy military center. Today it was one of Snohomish County’s major industrial centers. Next week it would turn 50 years old.
