50 years ago (1962)

The Parkland Lutheran Children’s Home continued to resist its untimely demolition. Wrecking crews were on site, but only one part of a back wall was pulled down. The building was built to last 1,000 years.

Bob Boggs and Mel McLean of B&M Stores announced the start of construction of a new supermarket on the northeast corner of Broadway and Everett Avenue. The new store would be similar to the other B&M Markets on Evergreen Way, in Marysville and at Frontier Village.

25 years ago (1987)

Linda Bryant, who started work with The Herald covering Stanwood in 1969, was now the features editor. Succeeding Nancy Erickson, she assumed direction of NW Life, The Key, arts and entertainment, television and lifestyles coverage, and the religion, food and home pages.

It was definitely flea season. After a mild winter they were hatching all over the place. Veterinarian Dr. Robert Throm of Perrinville Animal Hospital said fleas were remarkable creatures. A summer cabin could be vacant for nine months. Then just the vibrations from walking through the rooms caused them to hatch.
