50 YEARS AGO (1959)
Judge Tom Stiger swam from Hat Island into Everett yesterday afternoon. Art Williamson took Stiger to the island and accompanied him on the long swim back to Weyerhaeuser dock. The swimmer left at 4:20 and climbed out of the water at 7:15. It reminded many of Dorothy Britt McCumby’s swim from island to mainland over 30 years ago.
Martin’s Time Service was opening this weekend at Ninth Street and Highway 99 North, across from KRKO. There would be free orchids for the ladies and free candy and balloons for the kids. Any person buying gasoline Friday or Saturday would received an envelope with a ticket for one to 10 gallons of free gasoline.
25 YEARS AGO (1984)
About 100,000 people turned their heads skyward at Paine Field during the weekend to watch the Washington State International Air Fair. Despite perfect weather both Saturday and Sunday, attendance was down from last year, according Jaci Ballard, executive director of the fair.
Two Snohomish County sheriff’s deputies, Kevin Prentiss and James Kinard, graduated from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy at the Washington state Criminal Justice Training Center in south Seattle.
