Great news for fans of “Serial”: The hit podcast will launch a second season in the fall, and a third season should arrive next spring.

“We are hard at work reporting not one, but two distinct new series,” the podcast’s producers wrote in a newsletter emailed to fans of the podcast.

The new stories are “very different from Season One, but no less interesting to us,” the producers wrote. They did not provide details of the stories.

“Serial,” which was created by This American Life producer and former The Baltimore Sun Sarah Koenig, shattered records when it was released last fall, becoming the most popular podcast of all time.

Season One focused on the 1999 murder of Hae Min Lee, a student at Woodlawn High School in Baltimore County. The producers examined the case against Adnan Syed, a fellow student and ex-boyfriend of Lee, who was convicted and sentenced to life plus 30 years for Lee’s murder.

Syed, who has maintained his innocence, scored a break last week when the state’s second highest court ruled that an alibi witness could testify on his behalf.

An early episode of “Serial” focused on the claims of that witness, Asia McClain, a fellow Woodlawn student who said that she had seen Syed at the library at the time the murder was believed to have occurred.

Syed’s defense attorney at the time did not contact McClain or arrange for her to testify.

“Clearly the appellate judges are aware the public is watching,” the producers wrote, although they declined to speculate about if they believed the decision was influenced by the podcast.
