Set sail on the Schooner Zodiac (and drink some beer)

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to set sail on a classic tall ship in the Puget Sound and drink a little beer at the same time.

The historic Schooner Zodiac, a Bellingham-based tall ship, is offering a cruise to explore some of Washington’s best microbrews aboard on two multi-day brewery tours in July and August. The Schooner Zodiac embarks on a four-day brewery expedition of the San Juan Islands in July and a three-day transit from Bellingham to Seattle in August.

The four-day brewery expedition in the San Juan Islands takes place from July 9 through 12 and includes beer tasting at Anacortes Brewery and Island Hoppin’ Brewery on Orcas Island. Passengers will also be taken to the Cask and Schooner Pub in Friday Harbor. Cost is $915 per person for a standard bunk and $995 for a stateroom. Boarding time is 9:30 a.m.

While on the expedition participants will also learn to sail a historic tall ship to each destination under the supervision of experienced crew. Dave Eiffert and John Snow, co-owners of Snoqualmie Falls Brewery, will guide your taste buds as you discover the best brews in the region.

The three-day brewery cruise to Seattle is from Aug. 15 through 17 and includes beer tasting at Anacortes Brewery, Mukilteo’s Diamond Knot Brewery and Fremont Brewing in Seattle.

On the second day, passengers and crew will raise sail and cruise down to Mukilteo to visit Diamond Knot’s brewpub on the waterfront where passengers will once again be treated to a beer tasting of maritime themed beers such as the Poop Deck Pale Ale and Steamer Glide Stout. That evening, at anchor, the crew will put on a classic BBQ on deck for the passengers. Once again additional beer drinking will occur.

On day three, the final leg of the journey, passengers and crew will sail as much as possible before dropping sail to enter the Ballard Locks. Once through, passengers will be able to go ashore for one final tasting at Fremont Brewery for a final tasting of their line of beers that include their delicious Interurban IPA and their Wandering Wheat. Following this last refreshing excursion, the Zodiac will dock in Seattle at 5 p.m. at the Center for Wooden Boats on South Lake Union.

Passage on both cruises includes all meals prepared by a professional chef in the ship’s galley. Passengers on the Zodiac have the option of participating in the sailing of the ship as well as learning to navigate, stand watch and steer the vessel.
