Horticulture basics: Washington State University Master Gardener program presents “Horticulture Basics,” a series of classes for people who work in the green industry and want to increase their horticulture knowledge. Classes are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 5 through March 11.

The fee is $300 and includes training materials. Registration is required.

Applications can be picked up at the Snohomish County Extension office, 600 128th St. SE, Everett, or downloaded at www.snohomish.wsu.edu.

Deadline for applying is Oct. 31.

Volunteer guides: Washington Park Arboretum is seeking volunteer guides for its Saplings School Programs, 90-minute guided education tour of the arboretum.

Saplings School Programs are offered Mondays through Fridays from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 12:15 to 1:45 p.m. Guides are asked to commit to one three-hour shift per week for 10 weeks in the fall or spring and must attend orientation.

Gardening at Van Valey House: Everett Parks and Recreation is offering eight gardening classes at the Van Valey House this fall.

Classes are from 7 to 8 p.m. and cost $10, unless otherwise noted. Registration required.

Seattle Home Show 2: Learn from the professionals at the seventh annual Seattle Home Show 2.

The show brings building, landscaping and remodeling professionals together for four days filled with exhibits, demonstrations and seminars. Nearly 500 exhibitors display home and garden ideas, including interior design and remodeling, landscaping and outdoor entertaining. A Build Green exhibit area features the latest products and services promoting “green” living.

The Seattle Home Show 2 is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 6 through 8, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Oct. 9. Admission is $9, $6 seniors, $3 ages 7 through 15.

Book signing: Debra Prinzing will speak at the Snohomish Garden Club’s monthly meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 10 in the Performing Arts Center at Snohomish High School, 1316 Fifth St., Snohomish.

Prinzing will also sign copies of her new book, “The Abundant Garden: A Celebration of Color, Texture and Blooms.” Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

The meeting is open to the public.

Classes at UW: The Center for Urban Horticulture and Washington Park Arboretum are now linked under the new umbrella name of University of Washington Botanic Gardens.

The UW Botanic Gardens announces its fall schedule of classes and lectures. Classes are held at various locations. Registration required.
