Movie reviews

“The Best of Youth” HHHH A six-hour saga made for Italian television, covering the lives of two brothers and their friends from 1966 to the near-present day. Measured and subtle, the film eventually surpasses its TV-movie limitations and becomes totally absorbing. (In Italian, with English subtitles.) (R, for subject matter, nudity.)

“Crash” HHH The lives of a group of people intersect in Los Angeles, with race a special hot button issue. Director Paul Haggis goes overboard on the operatic style, but some scenes have real emotional power. With Matt Dillon, Thandie Newton, Terrence Howard, Don Cheadle. (R, for language, violence, nudity.)

“Downfall” HHH This Oscar-nominated German film looks at the last ten days of Hitler’s life (as well as the people around him), in a blunt but engrossing way. Bruno Ganz gives a strong performance that never suggests Hitler is anything other than a psychopath. (In German, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence, subject matter.)

“Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room” HHH Documentary account of the fantasyland business of Enron, the hugely successful energy company that crashed and burned when people began examining their books. The movie has a few storytelling flaws, but the story itself is amazing, and infuriating. (Not rated; probably PG-13, for language.)

“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” HHH A bright, sarcastic romp through the cult novel by Douglas Adams, about an average Englishman (Martin Freeman) whisked away on a space trip after the Earth is destroyed. A fresh cast and a Monty Python spirit make this a welcome change of pace. (PG rating is for subject matter.) (PG, for subject matter.)

“House of Wax” H Loose remake of a Vincent Price semi-classic; this one has the usual bunch of dumb teenagers (Elisha Cuthbert and Paris Hilton among them) stranded in a small town with a wax museum. Slightly better than the ongoing run of horror-movie remakes. (R, for violence, language.)

“The Interpreter” HH A United Nations interpreter (Nicole Kidman) overhears a threat against a visiting African dictator; secret service man Sean Penn wonders if she is telling the truth. Sporadically intelligent writing and one great suspense sequence make this a so-so time-killer. (PG-13, for violence, language.)

“It’s All Gone Pete Tong” HH A mockumentary about a hugely popular English club D.J. (all-out performance by Paul Kaye) whose career stops when he goes deaf. This movie actually comes around to a sweet purpose eventually, but the wretched excess of the first hour is more repellent than funny. (R, for language, nudity, subject matter.)

“Kicking &Screaming” HHH It doesn’t matter that this movie is pure sports formula, because Will Ferrell is in the zone, that place where comedians can improvise their way to huge belly laughs. He plays the coach of a misbegotten kids’ soccer team; Robert Duvall is his father and rival. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Kingdom of Heaven” H “Gladiator” director Ridley Scott returns to swords and sandals with a remarkably dull story of the Crusades. Orlando Bloom, who does not graduate to movie-star status, goes to the Holy Land to battle over Jerusalem with the Muslims. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Kung Fu Hustle” HHH An insane series of martial-arts fights makes this movie a wild and hilarious “Looney Tune” come to life. Stephen Chow stars and directs, with a great roster of kung fu fighters. (In Cantonese and Mandarin, with English subtitles.) (R, for violence.)

“A Lot Like Love” HH Every few years, Ashton Kutcher and Amanda Peet get together for a one-nighter-is that all it is, or are they meant for each other? This comedy gets points for its offbeat approach, but it doesn’t quite have the chemistry to go all the way. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Madison” HH A look at the 1971 unlimited hydroplane season, when the community-owned Miss Madison boat faced stiff competition in its hometown race. Jim Caviezel stars in this cornball affair, which has wonderful footage of classic boat racing. (PG, for subject matter.)

“Melinda and Melinda” HHH Woody Allen presents parallel stories of a messed-up woman (an excellent Radha Mitchell) arriving in Manhattan-one story comic, one tragic. Allen seems more assured in the serious section (too many jokes fall flat), but the movie is engaging and folks such as Will Ferrell and Chloe Sevigny come through nicely. (PG-13 rating is for subject matter.) (an excellent Radha Mitchell)

“Mindhunters” H Fledgling FBI profilers are dropped on a ghost-town island for a training mission, only to find a real serial killer at work among them. This ludicrous thriller has tin-ear dialogue and illogical action, served up with clueless gusto by director Renny Harlin. Christian Slater and LL Cool J are in the cast. (R, for violence, nudity, language.)

“Monster-in-Law” HH Jane Fonda returns to the screen in razor-sharp form after a 15-year-absence, as a prospective mother-in-law who tries to sabotage her son’s upcoming marriage to a nobody (Jennifer Lopez). Not much of a film, but the women are fun. (PG-13, for language, subject matter.)

“Palindromes” HH “Welcome to the Dollhouse” director Todd Solondz uses a bunch of different actresses to play his 13-year-old heroine, whose horrifying adventures include assassination plots and statutory rape. Solondz can capture the poisonous disconnects of modern life, but the movie is queasy-making. (Not rated; probably R, for language, subject matter.)

“Sahara” HH Pretty cheesy adventure movie with Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt, hero of Clive Cussler’s countless novels. Good location shooting can’t save the overblown plot, which begins with a lost Civil War gunboat rumored to be in Africa. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Short Cut to Nirvana: Kumbh Mela” HHH A funky, freewheeling trip to Kumbh Mela, a huge Hindu festival that happens once every 12 years. Agreeable encounters with many different gurus liven up the event. (In Hindi and English with English subtitles.) (Not rated; probably R, for nudity, subject matter.)

“Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith” HHHH Final production in the “Star Wars” saga, which begins in the fluffy mode of Parts I and II but becomes a cooler, darker movie when Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) turns toward the dark side of the Force. George Lucas rolls out the impressive hardware and the political metaphors with equal authority, leaving you to wonder why the previous installments of the trilogy couldn’t have been this good. (PG-13, for violence.)

“Unleashed” HHH Jet Li stars as a martial-arts whiz who’s been kept as a slave since childhood by a vicious gangster (Bob Hoskins). Morgan Freeman helps civilize the slave, but there’s still more fighting to do. A crazy action film that somehow works, thanks to Li and the script by Luc Besson. (R, for violence, language, nudity.)

“The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill” HHH A feel-good documentary about Mark Bittner, a formerly homeless man who tends a flock of wild parrots (probably released pets) in San Francisco. It’s a little hippy-dippy, but it creates a nice little urban haven. (G rating.)
