What: A subdivision that lights up annually and collects donations of food and cash for the Volunteers of America.
Where: Fir Grove subdivision between 100th Street SE and 106th Street SE (enter on 21st Avenue SE) east of Bothell-Everett Highway in Everett.
Why: This winding maze of streets is aglow every year. A walker could easily notch two miles doubling back and looping around. Carry those canned goods until the end of your trip to maximize the workout. There’s a drop-off tent a short way from the entrance down 21st Avenue. Follow the loop to the left on 101 Street SE and you will be on sidewalks most of the way. Some of the inner loops require careful shoulder loping, but wear a reflective jacket or something bright and walk facing traffic. The cars are creeping along gawking at the houses, so drivers are slow but inattentive. This might be the perfect opportunity to ponder what kind of decorations you will or won’t buy next year, because every blow-up snowman, nodding reindeer, flying Santa, snowing globe and dripping icicle known to Rudolph is represented here. If you happen to stumble out on 106th Street, just turn around and find your way back through the neighborhood. Walking along Bothell-Everett Highway is no fun.
