Q: Sequoia is a unique school in the Everett district. What do you like about it?
A: I came my sophomore year. I like how small the classes are, and the personal connection with teachers. They really want you to succeed, and it’s obvious. It’s the school for me. I love this school.
Q: How is it different from a traditional high school?
A: It’s a lot more flexible. My schedule, I start at 8:20 and go to 12:30.
Q: What classes are you taking this year?
A: Physics, Algebra 2 and Yearbook.
Q: Are you the yearbook editor?
A: I’ve taken on the editor role. This is my second full year working on the yearbook. Last year, I helped put together a two-page spread. This year, I designed our cover. When it comes out, I like knowing I had a part in publishing a book.
Q: Do you play sports?
A: I played varsity volleyball at Everett High, but I was injured and had to have surgery. I went to hit the ball and landed wrong. I was on crutches and in a lot of pain, but I still made it to every practice and every game. It’s still my team.
Q: You’re in AVID. What is that?
A: Advancement Via Individual Determination, it’s my third-period class. It’s a college-readiness program, and it’s kind of a big deal. I had to interview for it. We do mock SATs, learn to take good Cornell Notes, and have binder checks. It’s very rigorous and pretty intense. You’ve got to keep up.
Q: Are you looking forward to senior year?
A: I have more credits than most juniors. Next fall I’ll do Running Start at Everett Community College. Who can pass up free college credits?
Q: Tell me about your family.
A: My family is very involved in my life. They’re a huge support. My brother is a freshman at Western Washington University. That kind of pushes me, I want to go to Western, too. I love Bellingham.
Q: What do you plan to study in college?
A: That’s still a totally loose concept. I’m thinking of majoring in sociology. I’d like to study abroad my sophomore year. Where? That’s going to be a tough choice. I love to travel.
Q: What’s your favorite way to have fun?
A: I like going for walks and out for little adventures. I like to go to Seattle and do my own thing. I have friends at O’Dea High School, and we like to go to O’Dea basketball games.
Q: Have you had a job?
A: Not a full-time job, but I baby-sit and I’m going to start reffing for volleyball games. I baby-sit a 1½-year-old. She’s so much fun.
Q: What about favorite music, movies and books?
A: I like local hip-hop. I went to a concert at Western to see Portugal. The Man, and Macklemore is really good. Movies, I saw “Easy A” recently. I don’t have much time to read, but I like Jodi Picoult’s books.
Q: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
A: I hope to have a family and live in Portland or Seattle. I grew up in Seattle and I like the city.
