Take advantage of sales to create your dream bed

January is the month for white sales. A time to toss that old mattress — it’s been how many years? — update the linens and shed those lumpy pillows.

Let’s face it: Buying a new mattress can be a life-changing experience.

These modern-design beauties can run as high as $11,000 — and no, that doesn’t include an engine.

A king-size mattress from The Hotel Collection by Aireloom at Macy’s starts at more than $11,000, pre-white sale price, but that’s what a piece of “plush paradise” costs.

For a little bit less, Macy’s also sells the iComfort mattress by Serta ($4,499) which boasts a trifecta gel foam design for some triple-whammy comfort.

Macy’s also sells the Stearns &Foster mattress (sale prices from $1,000 to $3,800) that sports a space-age titanium alloy coil system.

All this sounds so comfy. But maybe a new mattress is not in your budget, despite the sales. So change your life with a new mattress pad instead.

Considerably cheaper, mattress pads can add extra comfort without breaking the bank.

Some pads also protect against dust mites, such as the Robin Wilson Home Luxury Mattress Pad at Bed Bath &Beyond ($80). The pad features a 2-inch side wall for extra loft.

At Garnet Hill, you can spend a bit more on a Supreme Memory-Foam Topper pad ($158 to $238) topped with 3 inches of cushy memory foam.

Now for a linen upgrade.

For comforter covers and pillow shams, Pottery Barn is featuring palettes of swirling paisleys along with Juliana organic bedding in flannels and organic cotton sateens that can beautifully cover a Pottery Barn classic down comforter ($149 to $189).

Time for pillow talk.

The topic of synthetics vs. feathers can have people taking sides quicker than you can say Posturepedic.

Nordstrom offers both: a standard-size Westin Heavenly Bed synthetic-fill pillow ($45) or a Westin Heavenly Bed Feather &Down Pillow ($85 for queen, $95 for king).

Finally, you might top your bed off with a throw. Go simple with a Kennebunk Home “Hanover” throw of textured yarn from Nordstrom ($58) or totally top in luxury with a solid cashmere throw ($249) from Williams-Sonoma.

Ah, luxurious bed. Sweet dreams.
