‘Taming of the Shrew,’ ‘Richard III’ coming this summer

Seattle Shakespeare Company’s Wooden O outdoor summer touring branch will bring the goofy “Taming of the Shrew” and the political powerhouse “Richard III” to cities near you, including stops in Edmonds and Lynnwood.

These free, outdoor summer plays will run from July 9 through Aug. 2. Both plays will perform in park venues throughout King County and in select places in Snohomish County.

George Mount, the company’s director of outdoor and touring performances, called “The Taming of the Shrew” a big and broad, funny and goofy play with “real gender issues (that) sneak up on you.”

With a sharp tongue and a volcanic temper, the headstrong Kate in “Taming of the Shrew” bows down to no man. Then a fortune-hunting suitor named Petruchio swaggers into town with a plan to win her over.

Through bickering and brawling, their courtship is a no-holds-barred battle of the sexes, ending in a love that neither one imagined.

Mount called “Richard III” a “glorious examination of political evil and its ramifications.”

“Richard III” stars a ruler so vile that everything withers around him. The women of the court struggle to depose this toxic ruler, while Richard reduces his country to ashes. Before collapse is realized, a young leader named Richmond challenges the old order to bring hope to the land.

“The Taming of the Shrew” will be performed at 7 p.m. July 15 and July 16 at Lynndale Park Amphitheater and at 3 p.m. July 19, at Edmonds City Park, Third Ave. S. and Howell Way, Edmonds.

“Richard III” will be performed at 7 p.m. July 22 and July 23 at Lynndale Park Amphitheater, 18927 72nd Ave. W. Lynnwood.

Donations are encouraged. For more information or for a complete schedule of performances, go to www.seattleshakespeare.org.
